NEW DELHI: In a significant move to empower the differently-abled, the Punjab government under Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann has allocated ₹85 lakh to continue the free bus travel facility for visually impaired and disabled citizens across the state. This initiative underscores the government’s commitment to inclusivity, social justice, and equal opportunities for all sections of society.

For many visually impaired and disabled individuals, commuting—even to school, work, or medical facilities—poses physical, social, and economic challenges. By funding free bus travel, the Mann government has ensured that these barriers are removed, enabling citizens to participate fully in education, employment, and social activities.

Dr. Baljit Kaur, Minister for Social Security, Women and Child Development, highlighted that visually impaired persons receive a 100 percent concession, while individuals with other disabilities receive a 50 percent fare concession on government buses. This facility is available to persons with 40 percent or more disability.

The government has already spent ₹2.61 crore of the ₹3.50 crore budget allocated for 2025–26 under this scheme. The newly released ₹84.26 lakh ensures continuity of services for eligible beneficiaries. Dr. Kaur emphasized that the Mann government’s focus extends beyond transport, with ongoing efforts in education, employment, and social empowerment to help disabled citizens integrate into mainstream society with confidence and self-reliance.

This initiative has brought tangible relief and dignity to thousands of disabled and visually impaired individuals in Punjab. It is a testament to the government’s sensitivity and its belief that social justice and respect for every citizen must remain a priority. By investing in the mobility and independence of disabled citizens, the Punjab government demonstrates that service is governance, creating a society where no individual is left behind.
