NEW DELHI: Punjab Cabinet Minister Dr. Baljit Kaur and Fazilka MLA Narinder Pal Singh Sawna on Monday reached flood-affected villages Teja Ruhela and Chakk Ruhela, where they personally distributed relief material, including cattle feed, to support families hit by rising waters.
Dr. Baljit Kaur said that due to heavy rainfall in the hills, nearly 1.7 lakh cusecs of water had been released from Harike Headworks, which is expected to reach Fazilka district through Sutlej Creek by Tuesday, further raising water levels.
She urged villagers to shift women, children, and the elderly to safer places immediately.
The Minister added that, under the directions of Chief Minister Bhagwant Singh Mann, the state government has set up relief camps across the district.
Teams from the Health, Animal Husbandry, Water Supply & Sanitation, and Revenue Departments are working in the affected areas. Special care, she said, is being taken to provide feed and medical assistance to pregnant women, lactating mothers, and children.
MLA Narinder Pal Singh Sawna assured residents that the Punjab Government is extending “every possible help” to the flood victims. He said that ration kits, cattle feed, and green fodder are being distributed on priority, while the District Flood Control Room remains active to address public concerns.
Residents can seek assistance by calling 01638-262153, he added.
Earlier in the day, Dr. Baljit Kaur chaired a review meeting with district officials at the District Administrative Complex to assess relief measures.
She directed officers to remain on high alert and work round-the-clock to ensure timely response.
Among officials present during the visit were Additional Deputy Commissioner (General) Dr. Mandeep Kaur, SDM Virpal Kaur, DSP Avinash Chander, and Tehsildar Jaspreet Singh.
