New Delhi: In a groundbreaking move, Indian Railways has launched a drone-powered cleaning system at Kamakhya Railway Station in Assam, marking a significant shift toward high-tech maintenance. This innovative approach uses drones equipped with high-pressure water jets to clean train coaches and station areas that are difficult to access manually. The initiative, first implemented in April, aims to enhance efficiency, precision, and hygiene in railway upkeep.
Traditionally, cleaning tasks were performed by workers, often posing safety risks due to hard-to-reach spots. The new drone system eliminates these challenges by spraying water and disinfectants on elevated surfaces, coach roofs, and other inaccessible areas. The Railways Ministry highlighted that this technology ensures thorough cleaning while reducing manual labor and operational time.
The move has been praised as a smart step toward modernization. BJP leader Dilip Ghosh shared a video of the drones in action, emphasizing the importance of advanced machinery in national progress. This is not the first time Indian Railways has employed drones—since 2018, they have been used for infrastructure monitoring, safety inspections, and real-time tracking.
The success of the pilot project at Kamakhya Station could lead to nationwide expansion, transforming how railway maintenance is conducted. By integrating automation and cutting-edge technology, Indian Railways continues to set new benchmarks in operational efficiency and passenger safety.
