New Delhi: Pope Francis, the 266th Pontiff of the Roman Catholic Church, has died at the age of 88 in his residence at the Vaticanโ€™s Casa Santa Marta. His passing was confirmed by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, the Camerlengo of the Apostolic Chamber, who announced the news at 9:45 AM.

Final Moments and Declining Health: The Popeโ€™s health had been fragile in recent months. He was hospitalized in February 2025 for bronchitis, which later developed into bilateral pneumonia. After 38 days at Romeโ€™s Agostino Gemelli Hospital, he returned to the Vatican to continue treatment. His respiratory issues stemmed from a lung surgery in his youth, and he had faced recurring health challenges in his later years.

A Life of Service and Simplicity;
Cardinal Farrell praised Pope Francisโ€™ unwavering dedication to the Church and his commitment to serving the poor and marginalized. Known for his humility and pastoral approach, the late Pontiff emphasized mercy, social justice, and interfaith dialogue throughout his papacy.

Updated Funeral Rites:
In April 2024, Pope Francis approved revisions to the papal funeral rites, requesting a simpler ceremony focused on faith rather than grandeur. His body will be placed in a coffin immediately after death, and the rites will reflect his vision of a humble farewell for a โ€œdisciple of Christ, not a worldly leader.โ€

The Vatican has yet to announce details of the funeral, which will be conducted according to the revised liturgical guidelines. The Catholic Church and the world now mourn the loss of a spiritual leader who shaped modern Christianity with compassion and reform.
