Goa has long been recognized for its innovative approach to healthcare. Its recent initiatives in cancer care are no exception. Goa’s Directorate of Health Services has taken significant strides to enhance cancer detection. The DHS is leveraging technology to provide top-tier care to its residents.

One of the most notable initiatives is the introduction of AI-powered lung cancer screening tools. They have been brought in across district hospitals and primary health centres (PHCs). This move aligns with Goa’s commitment to providing holistic cancer care. This is done by implementing these advanced screening tools. It underscores the state’s dedication to embracing innovation in healthcare. Goa aims to enhance early detection rates. It is crucial for improving cancer survival rates.

Another groundbreaking initiative is the launch of the iBreastExam. This was under the ‘Swasth Mahila Swasth Goa’ (SMSG) Project. This joint initiative aims to screen 100,000 women for breast cancer over two years. It was introduced by the Yuvraj Singh Foundation, DHS, UE Life Sciences, and SBI Foundation. The project has already screened over 111,980 women, with 58 confirmed cases of breast cancer. The success of this initiative has led to its extension until December 2025.

Goa’s cancer care also includes the introduction of the Pertuzumab-Trastuzumab combo therapy. It is for HER2+ breast cancer patients at Goa Medical College. This advanced monoclonal antibody treatment is now offered free of cost. It was previously available only in specialized hospitals globally. This reflects Goa’s commitment to accessible and cutting-edge healthcare.

The state’s healthcare initiatives extend beyond cancer care. The Mobile Cancer Van has screened 2,794 persons. This includes 78 cases of early detection and 13 confirmed cases. Additionally, the state has established multi-super-specialty cancer hospitals. This is done in collaboration with Tata Memorial. It promises top-tier care for cancer patients.

Goa’s pioneering steps in cancer care prove the state is committed to improving healthcare. Goa is setting a benchmark for other states to follow. These initiatives enhance healthcare accessibility. They also ensure that every citizen has the opportunity to receive quality medical treatment. That too without the burden of financial constraints.
