NEW DELHI: In a chilling incident amid heavy snowfall, two subway trains collided in Beijing, resulting in 515 people being rushed to the hospital, with 102 sustaining broken bones, according to authorities on Friday. The collision transpired on Thursday evening in the mountainous western region of Beijing, specifically on an elevated stretch of the expansive Changping line of the city’s subway system.

The primary train experienced automatic braking due to slippery tracks caused by the ongoing heavy snowfall. Unfortunately, the trailing train, navigating a descending section, skidded and was unable to brake in time, as revealed in a statement by the city transport authority on its social media account.

Prompt responses from emergency medical personnel, police, and transport authorities ensued, leading to the evacuation of all passengers by around 11 pm. The aftermath revealed that 25 passengers were under observation, and 67 remained hospitalised by Friday morning.

The relentless heavy snow, which began on Wednesday, has disrupted normalcy, resulting in the suspension of some train operations and the closure of schools. Alerts persist for icy roads, extreme cold, and the anticipation of further snowfall, with temperatures expected to plummet to minus 11 degrees Celsius overnight.
