‘Will Move On’: Sourav Ganguly Confirms Exit As BCCI President

Amid the talks that his tenure as the president of the Board Of Control For Cricket In India (BCCI) president will not be extended, Sourav Ganguly on Thursday said he has been an administrator for a long time and is now looking to move on to something else.

“I have been an administrator and I will move on to something else. Whatever you do in life, the best days are when you played for India. I have been president of the BCCI and I will go on to do bigger things,” the former Indian skipper said at an event.

Commenting on how the Indian team became a formidable unit under his captaincy, Ganguly remarked, “I never believed in history but the feeling in the past was that we lacked talent to play at that level. You don’t become an Ambani or Narendra Modi in one day. You have to work for months and years to get there.”

Roger Binny Might Replace Sourav Ganguly As Next BCCI Chief

According to reports, the 50-year-old was told that his performance as a BCCI president did not measure up to the expectations. The members of the cricketing board also stated that there is no precedent of a president holding two full terms.

Some BCCI officials also hinted that they were not happy with the fact that Ganguly as the BCCI president endorsed brands which were rivals of their sponsors. This did not go down well with many people in the board as their sponsors persistently raised this thorny issue during meetings.

Reportedly, Ganguly was offered the post of the Indian Premier League (IPL) chairman but he politely declined.

Earlier, The New Indian had reported that Ganguly, who had become the BCCI chief in October 2019, is unlikely to contest the BCCI elections. Roger Binny, the former Indian all-rounder, is tipped to be the next BCCI president after Ganguly.

Binny, who is the president of the Karnataka State Cricket Association, was recently selected as the representative of the KSCA in the BCCI AGM. He played 27 Tests and 72 ODIs for India and was one of the architects of India’s win in the 1983 World Cup.

Meanwhile, current BCCI secretary Jay Shah and treasurer Arun Dhumal are likely to retain their posts.

The BCCI elections will take place on October 18 in Mumbai. The cricketing body will release the list of candidates for various posts on October 15.
