Wife stopped from travelling abroad, Abhishek mulls legal action

Rujira Banerjee was stopped from travelling to Dubai at Kolkata airport

NEW DELHI: Trinamool Congress’ national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee is likely mulling legal action after his wife was stopped by the immigration authorities from travelling abroad at the Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.

Abhishek Banerjee’s wife, Rujira, along with their two children, were scheduled to board a Dubai-bound flight today at 7 in the morning. She was allegedly stopped following an active lookout notice that was issued against her.

According to party sources, Abhishek Banerjee is contemplating filing a contempt of court case for restraining his wife from travelling abroad despite the Supreme Court order.

Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) questioned Abhishek Banerjee and his wife Rujira several times in connection with the coal pilferage scam.

Abhishek Banerjee and his wife were summoned to New Delhi by the ED. However, only the TMC leader appeared before the central financial probe agency.

His wife instead appeared at the Kolkata office of the department, located at the CGO complex in Salt Lake, Kolkata.

Speaking to The New Indian, Dr Shantanu Sen, TMC Rajya Sabha MP, said, “It is something more than a political vendetta. TMC’s Nobo Juar program led by Abhishek Banerjee is going to be a milestone in political history because of the massive support given by the people in each place.”

“Being absolutely jealous and apprehensive of losing power and losing political ground, they have become much more vindictive. They are using the central agencies,” Sen said.

“This is not the first time they have targeted the family. Abhishek Banerjee’s wife and sister-in-law were harassed earlier too. This is nothing new. Since the BJP (Bharatiya Janata Party) came into power, they have been using these agencies politically. “The BJP going out of power is a matter of time now,” he further adds.

In 2019, TMC and the central government were at loggerheads over alleged undocumented gold recovered from Rujira Banerjee’s bag by the customs department. She was returning from Bangkok with her sister, Maneka Gambhir.
