Why Joshimath sinking should be declared as national emergency

17000 residents of sinking Himalayan town of Joshimath speaks are staring at displacement and loss of livelihood. Cracks have appeared in over 600 houses as the town sinks due to land subsidence. Locals blame two tunnels being dug as part of NTPC’s Tapovan-Vishnugad Hydroelectric Project for the cracks .

200 people have been evacuated over the past few days as CM Pushkar Singh Dhami surveyed the area.

Situated at a height of 6,000 feet, this town in Chamoli district is a gateway for Hindu and Sikh pilgrims to travelling to Badrinath and Hemkund Sahib. Locals claim govts have been apathetic towards the plight of residents even as this situation has persisted for a year now.
