NEW DELHI: The cyclonic circulation in the southern Bay of Bengal is expected to intensify into a “depression” on May 8, said the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday, adding that it was keeping a close watch on it.

The circulation is expected to grow into a low-pressure area on or around May 6, it said. The cyclonic storm has been named ‘Mocha’.

“The system is under constant watch. The details of its path and intensification could be revealed only after the formation of the low pressure area” said the IMD.

In the past, cyclones formed in the Bay of Bengal have often turned towards Odisha or Bangladesh. IMD will continue to monitor the system and provide updates on its path and intensity after the formation of the low-pressure area, officials said.

Meanwhile, a yellow alert – signifying the need for relief and rescue teams to remain alert for any calamity – has been issued in the hilly state of Himachal Pradesh for May 4 to May 7 following heavy rainfall in several parts of the state.

In the national capital of Delhi, a thin blanket of fog was noticed in some parts of Thursday morning following incessant rain and hailstorm on the previous day. The minimum and maximum temperature in the city is settled at 20.2 degrees Celsius and 28 degrees Celsius, respectively.

In addition, Rajasthan is expected to witness thunderstorms and lightning for the next three days due to an active western disturbance.
