NEW DELHI: Shankar Mahadevan, one of Indiaโs most celebrated music composers, shared fascinating anecdotes from his illustrious career in an interview with The New Indianโs Executive Editor, Rohan Dua. Discussing his creative process.
Mahadevan said, โFor Kuch Toh Hua Hai in Kal Ho Naa Ho, we used the sound of claps to create a unique rhythm. Experimentation is key to making music resonate across generations.โ
Reflecting on Dil Chahta Hai , Mahadevan revealed, โThe title track wasnโt originally planned as the title song. Music has a way of evolving; itโs organic. You canโt force these things it just happens.โ

Mahadevan also reminisced about Rockford , directed by Nagesh Kukunoor. โI quickly recorded a tune and handed it over before catching a flight. The next day, I got a call from Gulzar Saab, praising the composition. It was surreal.โ
On working across Indiaโs diverse film industries, Mahadevan remarked, โFrom Tamil and Telugu to Marathi and Malayalam, Iโve collaborated with every major composer. Each project brings its own flavor and challenge.โ
Mahadevan emphasized the importance of humility in the industry. โEgo only gets in the way of creativity. Staying grounded is how Iโve managed to thrive.โ
