WB violence: Fact-finding committee to probe human rights violations

A fact-finding committee will be on a three-day visit to West Bengal to assess the alleged violation of human rights in the state during the Ram Navami processions in the state’s Howrah and Hooghly districts.

The committee, comprised of members of civil society, will visit the affected areas on April 8, 9 and 10.

The fact-finding team will consist of six members who will be visiting the affected areas to take stock of the situation before submitting their report.

According to the sources, on April 8, the committee will be visiting Rishra Hooghly Sandhyabazar in front of Bara Masjid to meet the victims. They will then visit SSKM Hospital to meet the victims.

On April 9, the committee will visit Panchasheel and Gangandeep apartments on GT Road. The committee members will then visit Vivek Vihar on GT Road, where they will visit Shree Apartments and finally Kundal Gagan.

The committee will be holding residential meetings and interacting with the victims and their family members.

The committee will also visit Shiv Mandir, which has been vandalised.

On April 10, the Committee will be meeting with the Commissioner of Police, Chandanagar and the Commissioner of Police, Howrah. The meeting will be followed by a meeting with the Home Secretary at Nabanna.

The committee will consist of Justice (Retd) L Narsimha Reddy, Former Chief Justice, Patna High Court; Rajpal Singh, IPS/IG State Crime Branch (Retd.); Dr Charu Khanna, advocate and former member, NCW; Om Prakash Vyas, advocate and former Joint Registrar (Law) NHRC; Sanjeev Nayak, senior journalist and Bhavna Bajaj, advocate and former consultant, NCPCR.
