Violence Mars Peace In Tripura As TMC, CPIM Clash With BJP Over MC Polls

AGARTALA: Political heat is soaring unabated in Tripura as incidences of confrontation by the visiting leaders of Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) are on the rise ahead of the municipal polls scheduled for November 25.

The principal Opposition CPIM too has joined the ranks with frequent wrangling with the BJP after three saffron parry supporters were injured in an ugly incident in Belonia town in the South Tripura district on Monday night.

According to the Tripura Police, all three injured BJP party workers are from the Kalinga Nagar area and have been identified as Shibu Roy Barman, Sushanta Dutta and Uddav Dutta.

While Barman sustained multiple injuries on his wrist, Dutta was stabbed and also suffered grievous head injury.

All the accused are CPIM supporters.

Earlier, the Supreme Court had refused to delay the November 25 elections after CPIM moved SC citing law and order as the problem.

TRIPURA EXPOSE: Govt Land Claimed As Mosque, Witnesses Say Never Saw Namazis; 21-Day Delayed Plaint Punches Holes In Arson Theory

The relatively peaceful state has been in the news ever since entry of TMC in the poll fray. Reports of arson had surfaced at mosques in Panisagar and Rowa that were later found to be untrue after probe by North Tripura Police.

Allegations and counter allegations are bringing TMC and BJP face to face.

On November 20, Sayani Ghosh, the youth wing president of TMC allegedly tried to run over BJP workers along with others in Agartala.

She was driving a vehicle beyond the prescribed speed limit. She was arrested by the East Agartala women police the next day on the charges of attempt to murder. Police officials said they are investigating the case and arrest was made on the basis of preliminary investigation.

Ghosh had come to the capital city ahead of TMC General Secretary Abhishek Banerjee’s visit on Monday. She even threatened Tripura Chief Minister Biplab Deb. However, she was granted bail by the court.

Earlier on November 12, BJP supporters were attacked while conducting a door to door campaign in Rajbari area for Dharmanagar Municipal Council election.

An FIR has been registered against two TMC supporters, the North Tripura district police officials sais

In another incident that took place on November 16, four TMC workers (not from the state) were arrested by the East Agartala police for allegedly hatching a conspiracy for the polling day.

On November 17, BJP supporters were allegedly attacked at Kalitilla.

The Teliamura police have registered an FIR in this connection against five known and 20 unknown TMC supporters.

Police have arrested five TMC supporters, while one managed to get bail from the court.

It is worth mentioning here that BJP won 112 out of the total 334 seats uncontested in the last civic body polls in Tripura. For the current elections too, the ruling party is being touted as a big favourite for the win, riding high on the popularity of the incumbent chief minister, Biplab Deb.

The apex court also directed the IG and DGP of Tripura to take steps to ensure municipal elections are conducted in a peaceful manner on November 25.
