U’kahnd: 38 Years On, Operation Meghdoot Martyr’s Body Found

The body of Haldwani resident, Chandrashekhar Harbola, a martyr in 1984 ‘Operation Meghdoot’ in which the Indian Army captured Siachen Glacier, has been found after 38 years.

The family of the martyr, who was just 28-year-old, went missing during the landmark operation.

Shanta Devi (64), the wife of Harbola, who broke down after hearing the news, said, “All our hopes have dashed now. I don’t know what to say or feel except recall the memories of a life that we spent together. This is a closure for my family.”

The mortal remains of the martyr, who was part of the Kumaon Regiment of the Army, will be reaching his home on Monday, August 15. Harbola is survived by his two daughters.

The operation, which was one of its kind in the world, helped India capture over 2,500 square kilometers of Siachen Glacier giving strategic edge in the region.
