UK PM Rishi Sunak sacks Suella Braverman for Palestine remarks

NEW DELHI: Suella Braverman was sacked as the Home Secretary by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, on Monday. She has now been replaced by foreign minister James Cleverly, as announced by the PM’s office.

According to a report by the BBC, Braverman is slated to be offered a junior job in the government, however, she is unlikely to accept it. This is the second time that the former home secretary is leaving her post before her tenure elapses. Earlier in 2022, she had been given the same post in the short reign of the Liz Truss government, where she had broken the ministerial code of conduct by sending an official document through her personal ID.

She was brought back into the same role after six weeks after her resignation when Sunak came to power in the role of the British PM.

These developments took place after Braverman published an article in The Times criticising the Sunak government’s handling of pro-Palestine marches, stating that the London police is biased.

“I do not believe that these marches are merely a cry for help for Gaza,” Braverman wrote, adding, “They are an assertion of primacy by certain groups — particularly Islamists — of the kind we are more used to seeing in Northern Ireland.”

She accused the police officials of taking a softer stance on the “left-wing” demonstrators.

Following her comments, Sunak illustrated that the government still had full faith in her on Thursday. However, Braverman said, “It has been the greatest privilege of my life to serve as home secretary … I will have more to say in due course,” she was quoted as saying by PA Media. This was the final nail in her coffin.

Presently, former PM David Cameron has been appointed as the foreign secretary in Cleverly’s place.
