Three More Held By Delhi Police In Jahangirpuri Violence

NEW DELHI: Three more people have been arrested in connection with the violence that rocked Jahangirpuri area allegedly after stone-pelting at Hanuman Jayanti Shobha Yatra on April 16.

At least nine people including seven policemen were injured in the violence that created a divide between the Hindu and Muslim communities in the area.

With the arrest of Jahir Khan alias Jalil, Anabul alias Sheikh, and Tabrez, the total number of arrests in the case has reached 36 including three juveniles.

While Jalil and Sheikh were arrested on Friday, the third accused, Tabrez was apprehended from Jahangirpuri on Saturday, as per Delhi Police officials.

The Delhi Police has already charged most of the accused including Ansar under the stringent National Security Act (NSA) in the violence case.

Besides the Delhi Police, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) is also investigating a possible financing of the violence. The agency has initiated a probe under the sections of the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) against main accused Ansar.

Ansar was arrested by the Delhi Police on April 17 and sent to police custody by a court. Police in its remand copy stated that Ansar, along with his four-five companions reached near the mosque and allegedly started the ruckus, which acted as a trigger point for clashes between the two communities.

As per Delhi Police officials, Ansar is a known history-sheeter of the area and has a record of his criminal history since 2007.

The source said that Ansar is said to be running a bootlegging business and gambling racket in the area and has been taken into preventive custody a number of times in the past. He has a total of seven FIRs have been registered against him.
