NEW DELHI: As Congress soars past the majority mark with ease, incumbent Chief Minister and Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) chief K Chandrashekhar Rao has handed in his resignation letter to Governor Tamilisai Soundararajan.

According to media reports, he had earlier sought an appointment with the governor to tender his resignation, however, later he sent his resignation notification through his OSD. KCR returned to his farmhouse in Gajwel, following his loss in the Kamareddy constituency.

The incumbent CM was contesting from two constituencies this time around, having lost in one to a debut leader from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Katipally Venkataramana Reddy. However, he exacted a thundering victory at Gajwel, securing a margin of 42,352 votes, defeating BJP’s Eatala Rajender.

Losing out on the Kamareddy seat, has left the BRS top brass reeling having conceded what used to be a party hotbed, with the party winning from the seat consecutively since the state’s inception. In 2013 Assembly election, Gampa Govardhan from the BRS, had posited a resounding victory, exacting 41.53 per cent votes, while in 2018, he won 42.02 per cent of the votes.

Presently, the hotbed has now been ceded to the BJP, as Congress’ Revanth Reddy also found himself losing the plot after a few rounds in the end, losing his lead out to Vekataramana.

The Congress has recorded a thumping success in the state having exacted a victory in 56 seats, while leading in eight. On the other hand, the BRS has emerged victorious on 32 seats, while it leads in seven constituencies.

The party that had initiated the Telangana movement for determination, has also lost out on its base in Kodangal, with Anumala Revanth Reddy from the Congress becoming victorious. The Congress CM and the Cabinet is slated to take oath on Monday.
