Shivam, a student of Sanskrit returning to Banaras, had arrived in Delhi two days prior. His father, Brij Bihari, shared his anguish with The New Indian, stating, “My son was trying to reach his train when suddenly, a wave of people rushed in different directions. He was caught in the middle and crushed by the crowd.” Shivam sustained a broken hand in the ordeal.
Confusion Over Train Announcements
After an investigation by the Delhi Police, significant information has emerged from sources that the chaos was triggered by a mix-up in train announcements. Two trains—Prayagraj Special and Prayagraj Express—caused widespread confusion as both had similar names. While the Prayagraj Express was stationed at Platform 14, an announcement for the arrival of Prayagraj Special at Platform 16 misled many passengers.

Those unable to board at Platform 14 assumed their train was arriving at Platform 16, leading to a dangerous rush.
The situation was further exacerbated by the presence of four trains bound for Prayagraj, three of which were delayed, resulting in an overwhelming surge of passengers at the station.
A Survivor’s Account: ‘It Felt Like a Planned Move’
Shivam Shukla vividly recalls the moment when the station descended into panic. “The platform was already overcrowded, and suddenly, people started shouting about a platform change. Everyone began running, but I never heard any official announcement. It felt as if the situation was deliberately created to cause chaos,” he claimed.

His statement raises concerns about possible mismanagement or foul play behind the incident. Authorities have yet to confirm whether the platform change rumor was an intentional act of mischief or an unfortunate miscommunication.
Authorities Urged to Act
Following the stampede, railway authorities have been urged to improve communication systems and crowd management strategies to prevent such tragedies in the future. The Delhi Police have assured a thorough investigation into whether any lapses in station management contributed to the crisis.
As investigations continue, passengers and families affected by the stampede await justice and stronger measures to ensure their safety at railway stations nationwide.
