NEW DELHI: Sunil Chhetri comeback in the AFC Asian Cup 2027 qualifiers will see Indian football legend Sunil Chhetri return from international retirement. He will strengthen India’s squad in the crucial qualification campaign.
The All India Football Federation (AIFF) confirmed the news, marking a significant moment for Indian football. Chhetri, 40, had previously retired in June 2024 following India’s FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers. His farewell match was against Kuwait on June 6, 2024, where India secured a 2-1 victory.
“Sunil Chhetri is back. The captain, leader, legend will return,” AIFF stated.

India’s head coach Manolo Márquez highlighted the impact of his return.
“Qualification is crucial. I discussed the situation with Sunil, and he agreed to return. His experience is invaluable to the team,” he said.

With 94 international goals, he is the fourth highest active goal scorer in the world, trailing only Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, and Ali Daei.
