NEW DELHI: In an unprecedented moment, South Africa’s fielding coach Wandile Gwavu had to step in as a substitute fielder during an ODI tri-series match against New Zealand. The rare sight caught commentators and fans by surprise.
South Africa had a player shortage. Many key players were unavailable due to SA20 commitments. With just 12 players, they had to call on fielding coach Wandile Gwavu.

The unusual incident happened in the 37th over of New Zealand’s innings. Cameras captured South Africa’s fielding coach Wandile Gwavu taking the field, creating an unexpected and almost comical moment in international cricket.
Not the First Time
This isn’t the first time a South African coach has stepped in as a player. Last year, batting coach JP Duminy also had to fill in as a fielder during an ODI against Ireland due to illness within the squad.

Commentators were visibly stunned by Gwavu’s appearance on the field. One exclaimed, “We don’t see this happening too often! South Africa’s fielding coach is on the field!” Fans on social media reacted with amusement and disbelief. One fan posted, “This is what happens when you don’t have enough players! Cricket analysts called the incident a reflection of South Africa’s squad depth issues. One noted, “They had no choice but to call on their coach. It speaks volumes about the challenges they’re facing.”
Despite the unexpected moment, New Zealand dominated the match. Kane Williamson played a brilliant unbeaten century, guiding his team to a six-wicket victory. They successfully chased down South Africa’s target of 305 runs.

This incident highlights South Africa’s struggles with player availability. It was memorable for fans but raises concerns about the team’s depth and planning.
With more players prioritizing T20 leagues over national duty, South Africa may need to rethink their approach to squad selection to avoid similar situations in the future.
