NEW DELHI: Cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar joined the global chorus of praise for Jannik Sinner after the Italian clinched his maiden Wimbledon title, defeating Carlos Alcaraz in a gripping four-set final — 4-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 — on Sunday.
Taking to his official X handle, Tendulkar wrote:
“A match befitting a Wimbledon Final — both Sinner and Alcaraz kept demanding the best out of each other. Congratulations, Sinner, you belong to a special club today. Well played, Alcaraz, many more finals to come your way.”
The 23-year-old Sinner showcased his trademark precision from the baseline but lost the opening set to an aggressive Alcaraz, who used his heavy hitting and crafty drop shots to gain the early lead. However, Sinner stormed back, winning three closely fought sets to lift his fourth Grand Slam title, adding to his two Australian Open and US Open victories.
Sinner’s Wimbledon campaign included dominant early-round performances — he dropped just 17 games in the first three matches — and a scare in the fourth round when Grigor Dimitrov retired hurt while leading. Battling elbow concerns, Sinner overcame Ben Shelton and Novak Djokovic before scripting a memorable triumph in his fifth Grand Slam final appearance.
In his post-match address, Sinner praised Alcaraz, saying:
“Carlos, it’s so difficult to play against you. But we share an amazing relationship both on and off the court. Keep going, keep pushing — you’ll hold this trophy many more times. You already have two titles.”
Sunday’s final not only delivered a showcase of skill and sportsmanship but also reinforced the growing rivalry and mutual respect between two of tennis’ brightest stars.
