NEW DELHI: In a significant recognition of her continued contribution to parliamentary proceedings, S. Phangnon Konyak, Member of Parliament, Rajya Sabha, representing Nagaland, has been re-appointed to the Panel of Vice-Chairpersons in the Rajya Sabha.
The announcement was made during the ongoing Monsoon Session 2025, reaffirming her role in presiding over House discussions and assisting the Chair in the smooth conduct of legislative business.
This re-appointment marks yet another milestone in Konyak’s remarkable political journey. She holds the distinction of being the first woman from Nagaland elected to the Rajya Sabha, and in 2023, became the first woman from her state to be nominated to the prestigious Vice-Chairpersons panel, where she also presided over proceedings of the Upper House.
A Voice from the Northeast
Konyak’s continued presence on the panel is a strong affirmation of the growing representation of the Northeast in the national political discourse. Her re-appointment not only celebrates her individual contributions but also serves as a powerful symbol of inclusion, gender representation, and regional diversity within India’s parliamentary framework.
Role of the Panel
The Panel of Vice-Chairpersons in the Rajya Sabha comprises members nominated by the Chairman to preside over sessions in the absence of the Chair and Deputy Chair. Members of this panel are selected for their experience, decorum, and commitment to parliamentary values.
Konyak’s presence on the panel brings both regional representation and a strong voice for women in leadership within the Rajya Sabha.
