Ruckus At NCW: Why Gopal Italia Was Detained In Delhi

People in Gujarat take part in a march in support of Gopal Italia

The drama unfolded on Thursday at the National Commission for Women (NCW) office when hundreds of Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) supporters gathered to protest against the women’s body for summoning AAP Gujarat chief Gopal Italia over his purported video in which he had made objectionable remarks on women.

Italia was called to give a reply at the NCW office in Delhi on Thursday morning. But he reached there, with hundreds of supporters in tow.

According to the NCW chief, Rekha Sharma, Italia had to come to give the reply to the summon that was sent by the commission. “He was supposed to come alone but he came with supporters who created a ruckus at the NCW office. That’s why we called the police,” Sharma told the media.

At about noon, Italia, along with the supporters, reached the NCW office. Many of the AAP workers were wearing caps and banners. They started raising slogans against the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and NCW.

While standing outside the NCW office, Italia tweeted that he was being threatened by NCW to get arrested by the police. The BJP has a grudge against the Patidar samaj (Patel community) in Gujarat. But he is not scared of the BJP.

A few minutes after his tweet, a team of Delhi Police came and detained Italia from outside the office of NCW. Soon after his detention, many AAP leaders started tweeting and criticising his detention by the Delhi Police.

The party said that the NCW and Delhi Police had worked at the behest of the BJP. They have tried to target the Patel community through action against Italia.

The Delhi Police, however, said that Gopal Italia was detained because of a ruckus created at the NCW office. He was summoned by NCW over his purported video. But he came along with a lot of workers. After keeping him for four hours of detention, he was allowed to go.
