NEW DELHI: The Rishikesh–Karnaprayag Broad Gauge (BG) railway line, a transformative infrastructure project in Uttarakhand, is advancing steadily towards its anticipated completion by December 2026.
This 125.2 km single-track line, developed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), aims to revolutionize connectivity in the Himalayan region, significantly reducing travel time between Rishikesh and Karnaprayag from over six hours to approximately two hours.
Beyond enhancing regional connectivity, the railway line holds strategic importance due to its proximity to the India-China border. It is envisioned to bolster national security logistics and facilitate the movement of defense personnel and equipment. Additionally, the project is integral to the Char Dham Railway initiative, aiming to provide seamless access to the sacred pilgrimage sites of Kedarnath and Badrinath.
Engineering Feats
Constructing the railway through the rugged Himalayan terrain presents significant engineering challenges. The project encompasses 17 tunnels, including the recently completed 14.57 km Devprayag–Lachmoli tunnel, now recognized as India’s longest rail tunnel. This tunnel was constructed using a German-made Tunnel Boring Machine (TBM), showcasing advanced engineering capabilities.
The alignment also includes 35 major bridges, meticulously designed to withstand the region’s seismic activity. Experts from IIT Roorkee conducted site-specific seismic studies to ensure structural resilience against earthquakes, floods, and landslides.
Technological Innovations
To navigate the complex topography, the project employed state-of-the-art surveying techniques. High-resolution stereo satellite imagery from the WorldView-2 satellite facilitated the creation of a precise Digital Elevation Model (DEM), enabling accurate alignment and design. This technological approach minimized environmental impact and optimized construction efficiency.
Current Progress
As of April 2025, approximately 70% of the construction work is complete, with 28 out of 38 planned tunnel breakthroughs achieved. The remaining tunnels are on schedule for completion by March 2025. Eleven stations are currently under construction, including key locations such as Yog Nagari Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and Karnaprayag.
The railway line is poised to catalyze economic growth in Uttarakhand by improving access to remote areas, promoting tourism, and facilitating the movement of goods and people. It is expected to create over 2,000 jobs during construction and operation phases, contributing to the socio-economic development of the region.
The Rishikesh–Karnaprayag BG rail link stands as a testament to India’s engineering prowess and commitment to enhancing infrastructure in challenging terrains. Upon completion, it will not only improve connectivity and economic prospects in Uttarakhand but also serve as a strategic asset for national security and disaster response in the Himalayan region.
