Rishabh Pant is out of the final Test against England due to a foot fracture sustained during the fourth Test. Despite the injury, he played with remarkable courage, scoring a half-century. Coach Gautam Gambhir praised Pant’s inspiring spirit and legacy.
NEW DELHI: India’s star wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant has been ruled out of the fifth and final Test against England after sustaining a foot fracture. Head coach Gautam Gambhir confirmed the news following India’s gritty draw in the fourth Test at Old Trafford.
Pant had to retire hurt on Day 1 after a reverse sweep off Chris Woakes deflected onto his right foot. Despite the injury, he returned limping on Day 2 and went on to score a valiant half-century before being replaced behind the stumps by Dhruv Jurel.
“It’s official—he’s out of the series,” said Gambhir. “But I must say this: the character and spirit Rishabh showed has laid the foundation for what this team stands for. Playing with a broken foot—there’s no greater testament to courage. Future generations will remember this.”
Known for his reluctance to single out individuals in team sport, Gambhir broke form in a heartfelt message shared in a BCCI video, saying:
“This Test team’s foundation will be built on what Rishabh has done. I usually don’t speak about individuals, but this moment transcends that. You haven’t just lifted the dressing room—you’ve inspired an entire generation. This is your legacy, and India will always be proud of you.”
