President Murmu gives nod to repeal 3 farm laws

NEW DELHI: President Draupadi Murmu has given her nod to repeal the controversial three farm laws on Sunday. The Centre had already announced the repeal of the laws on November 19, 2021, following a year of protests against it by farmers, mostly from Punjab and Haryana.

The Ministry of Law and Justice had issued a statement that read, “The following Act of Parliament received the assent of the President on the 30th November, 2021, and is hereby published for general information. This Act may be called the Farm Laws Repeal Act, 2021.”

The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020, the Farmers’ Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020 and the Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act. 2020 has now been repealed with the President’s approval.

How long were these laws operational?

The trajectory of the three agricultural laws — The Farmers Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Act, 2020; The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Act, 2020; and The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Act, 2020 — commenced on June 5, 2020, with the issuance of three ordinances by the President. These ordinances served as the precursor to the subsequent Acts.

The trio of ordinances included The Essential Commodities (Amendment) Ordinance, 2020; The Farming Produce Trade and Commerce (Promotion and Facilitation) Ordinance, 2020; and The Farmers (Empowerment and Protection) Agreement on Price Assurance and Farm Services Ordinance, 2020. These ordinances were later supplanted by the Acts mentioned above, which received parliamentary approval in September 2020.

However, the Supreme Court stayed the implementation of these laws on January 12, 2021. Hence, these laws were operational for only 221 days.
