NEW DELHI: Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal is on a three-day visit to Australia from September 23 – 25 at the invitation of Senator Don Farrell, Minister of Trade and Tourism. On the last day of the visit, he will co-chair the 19th India-Australia Joint Ministerial Commission meeting in Adelaide, where discussions will focus on enhancing bilateral economic engagement.
Goyal’s itinerary also includes interactions with leading Australian and Indian CEOs, as well as representatives from Australian pension funds, to explore significant investment opportunities in India’s dynamic growth sectors.
His discussions will take place during events organized by key industry groups such as the Business Council of Australia, the Centre for Australia-India Relations, and the India-Australia Business Community Alliance.
These meetings are aimed at highlighting the complementary strengths and synergies between the Indian and Australian economies.
In addition to business leaders, Goyal will engage with the vibrant Indian community in Sydney, including Indian-origin Chartered Accountants and emerging leaders from diverse backgrounds.
This outreach underscores the importance of the Indian diaspora in strengthening ties between the two nations. The Commerce Minister’s visit is expected to provide a significant boost to the already strong trade and investment relationship following the recent finalization of the Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement.
By fostering business-to-business engagement, the visit is also aimed towards the promotion of strategic partnerships in critical sectors such as minerals, manufacturing, education, renewable energy, infrastructure, tourism, and space.
This visit comes at a crucial time as India and Australia enhance their collaboration both bilaterally and in multilateral forums like the G20 and the Quad, aimed at global progress. Goyal will also participate virtually in the Indo-Pacific Economic Framework meeting on Tuesday to further emphasise the importance of international cooperation.
Australia is the 25th largest investor in India with foreign direct investments of ₹12,450 crore from April 2000 to June 2024.
