NEW DELHI: Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR)—often described as the country’s most important tech corridor—may soon witness a transformative makeover as government leaders and industry heavyweights launch a unified mission to decongest and modernise the 17-km stretch that powers a significant share of India’s digital economy.

At a Goldman Sachs–hosted roundtable led by ORRCA Bangalore, Prestige Group’s Executive Director & CEO (Office), Juggy Marwaha, highlighted the corridor’s staggering economic influence. ORR accounts for over 18% of India’s US$150 billion IT exports and employs nearly eight lakh professionals, generating an estimated ₹1.75–2.25 lakh crore annually. If considered a standalone state, Marwaha noted, ORR would rank #6 or #7 in India by GDP.

Despite its economic might, ORR continues to grapple with chronic traffic congestion. A commute as short as 5 km can take 55–70 minutes, costing millions of productive hours every day. Marwaha pointed to the Whitefield Metro’s recent positive impact—reduced traffic, stabilised commute times and significantly improved productivity—as evidence that infrastructure interventions can yield immediate gains.

Yesterday’s roundtable marked a turning point, bringing together the Government of Karnataka, led by IT/BT Minister Priyank M. Kharge, senior bureaucrat Maheshwar Rao, urban mobility expert RK Misra, ORRCA, and key global occupiers including Google, Microsoft, State Street, Morgan Stanley, Intel, Oracle and Intuit. Leading developers such as Prestige Group, Embassy Group, Kalyani Developers, Brookfield Properties and others committed to collaborative action.

A major outcome was the formation of a Joint ORR Action & Monitoring Committee, which will convene every 45 days to oversee:

• Progress on the ₹450 crore ORR upgradation
• Monthly transparency dashboards
• Rapid fixes across lighting, drainage, road services and telecom ducts
• Clearing high-impact junction choke points

Crucially, stakeholders reaffirmed “ORR Metro by December 2026” as a non-negotiable target, with full support pledged to BMRCL for expedited execution.

Prestige Group also announced a PPP + CSR initiative to widen and redesign Prestige Lakeshore Drive near Bellandur Lake, envisioning a safe, green, landscaped mobility boulevard for the ORR ecosystem.

The unified message from government and industry was clear: ORR built India’s tech economy—now it’s time to rebuild ORR itself.
