Commercial LPG rates soar: Centre implements over Rs 100 hike

NEW DELHI: The prices of commercial 19 kg LPG cylinders in the four metro cities have been revised by state-run oil marketing companies Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation, and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation. These revisions will take effect on November 1.

With effect from Wednesday, Oil Marketing Companies have announced a nationwide increase in the price of commercial LPG cylinders by Rs 101.50.

The changes will take place in 4 different metro cities- Mumbai, Chennai, Delhi and Kolkata. The 19 kg commercial LPG cylinder will now cost Rs 1,785.50 in Mumbai, Rs 1,999.50 in Chennai, Rs 1,833 in Delhi, and Rs 1,943 in Kolkata following the price adjustment. Chennai will have the highest prices for commercial LPG cylinders, while Mumbai will have the lowest prices among the four metro areas.

LPG is widely used as a motor fuel, cooking gas, heating, and cooling agent, and even for some upscale industrial operations.

The price of domestic LPG cylinders meanwhile has remained constant at Rs 903 in New Delhi, Rs 902.5 per cylinder in Mumbai, Rs 929 per cylinder in Kolkata, and Rs 918.5 per cylinder in Chennai.

The last time domestic LPG cylinder prices were changed was in August, when they were cut by Rs 200 each. The price reduction of an LPG cylinder for Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY) beneficiaries is set at Rs 500— Rs 200 as a price reduction and Rs 200 as an existing subsidy. The Union cabinet approved an increase, bringing the subsidy amount for approximately 96 million low-income households from Rs 200 to Rs 300 per cylinder.

75 lakh new LPG connections under the Ujjwala scheme were previously approved by the union cabinet and will be distributed over the course of the following three years. These connections will cost Rs 1,650 crore in total.

The prices of cooking gas and ATF are revised by the state-owned Indian Oil Corporation (IOC), Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd (BPCL), and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd (HPCL) on the first of each month, taking into account the average international price of the previous month.
