No CCTV Camera, 5 Cops In Security; HP Assembly Building Is An Easy Target

Yellow flags with Khalistan written on them were found hanging from the iron grills of the entrance gate of the HP Assembly complex on May 8.

SHIMLA: There is no security camera. Only five policemen manning the security. The Himachal Pradesh Legislative Assembly building might reflect the peaceful surroundings of Dharamshala but it also raised questions about security.

The building, which was built in 2006 and comes alive only for the winter session of the HP Legislative Assembly, was in the news on Sunday when Khalistani flags were found hanging at the main gate in the morning.

The CCTV footage could have played a crucial role in identifying the accused who also made pro-Khalistan graffiti on the Vidhan Sabha’s walls in green colour. Without the footage, the police are groping in the dark.

The fact that the Himachal Pradesh Police has deployed only one sub-inspector and four constables to guard the building, that houses the entire cabinet, all MLAs and top bureaucracy when it is convened during the winter, also makes things difficult for them.

The miscreants took advantage of the fact that there was no security guard posted near the main gate on Saturday night.

Police are now pinning their hopes on the nearby CCTV cameras. “CCTV cameras installed nearby would be scanned to get to the bottom of the case,” a top police official said. “There was a proposal to install CCTVs on the Assembly premises, but the plan was yet to see the light of the day,” he said, adding, “Security would also be beefed up.”
