Neeraj Chopra: No Close Bond with Arshad Nadeem Amid Indo-Pak Tensions

Summary

At the Doha Diamond League, Neeraj Chopra clarified his relationship with Arshad Nadeem, stating they were never close friends and that recent Indo-Pak tensions would affect their interactions. He emphasized the importance of mutual respect in athlete relationships.

NEW DELHI: At a recent press conference ahead of the Doha Diamond League, Olympic gold medalist Neeraj Chopra addressed his relationship with Pakistani javelin thrower Arshad Nadeem, providing clarity amid the escalating tensions between India and Pakistan.

Chopra made it clear that while he and Nadeem have shared competitive moments on the field, they were never particularly close friends. Addressing the current strained relations, Chopra said:

“We were never really close friends. Things won’t be the same after this (referring to the recent Indo-Pak tensions). But if someone speaks to me respectfully, I respond with the same respect.”

This statement came as Chopra discussed his invitation to Nadeem to participate in the Neeraj Chopra Classic, a javelin meet initially scheduled for May 24 in Bengaluru. However, due to escalating conflict following a militant attack in Indian Kashmir, the event has been postponed. Chopra emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of athletes and the broader community, stating that a revised schedule will be announced later.

Backdrop of the Tension

The postponement comes in the wake of heightened tensions between India and Pakistan, following a deadly attack in Pahalgam that claimed the lives of several security personnel. While expressing his sorrow over the incident, Chopra took to social media to stand in solidarity with the Indian Armed Forces, saying:

“We are proud of our Brave Indian Armed Forces who are fighting for our nation against terrorism. Let’s do our part and make sure to follow guidelines to ensure everyone’s safety during this time. Jai Hind, Jai India, Jai Army.”

Earlier, Nadeem had declined Chopra’s invitation, citing a scheduling conflict as he prepares for the Asian Athletics Championships in South Korea. However, Chopra’s gesture of inviting the Pakistani athlete had sparked mixed reactions online, with some fans expressing dissatisfaction.

Chopra’s Stance on Sportsmanship

Despite the controversy, Chopra maintained his stance on sportsmanship and respect. His statement at the Doha Diamond League emphasized the importance of mutual respect, even in challenging times.

“If someone talks to me respectfully, I reciprocate the respect,” Chopra reiterated, underlining that political tensions should not entirely dictate personal or professional relationships.

The situation highlights the challenges athletes face when navigating relationships amid national conflicts, with Chopra balancing his roles as both a sportsman and a patriot.
