NEW DELHI: In a historic recognition of his stellar achievements and unwavering commitment to the nation, Neeraj Chopra, India’s iconic javelin thrower and double Olympic medallist, has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army. The honorary commission officially took effect on April 16, 2025, as per the government notification issued by the Ministry of Defence’s Department of Military Affairs on May 13, 2025.
A Journey of Excellence: From Naib Subedar to Lieutenant Colonel
Neeraj Chopra’s association with the Indian Army began in 2016 when he joined as a Naib Subedar under the sports quota on August 26. This early connection between the ace athlete and the army has blossomed over the years, reflecting his dual commitment to sports and service to the nation.
Following his historic gold medal win at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics — India’s first-ever Olympic gold in athletics — Neeraj was promoted to the rank of Subedar in 2021. His rise continued in 2024 when he attained the rank of Subedar Major, the highest rank available to a Junior Commissioned Officer (JCO).

Now, on April 16, 2025, Neeraj has been conferred the honorary rank of Lieutenant Colonel in the Territorial Army, a symbolic but prestigious acknowledgment of his extraordinary contributions.
