Nainital: Another Joshimath in making?

Nainital faces battle for survival as landslides pose big threat to town of lakes. Ballia Nala, which is considered as foundation of Nainital, suffered damages due to landslides. Cracks have appeared on Mall Road, putting town in danger.

Locals blame successive governments’ failure to prepare an action plan might cost people dearly. They say that people started leaving the place. Locals say everything in Nainital is under threat. They seek government’s help.

Meanwhile, Geologists see threat to Ballia Nala due to landslides that release water from Naini lake.

Historians, on other hand, say it was in 1867 that Nainital faced its first earthquake. British rulers took measures to limit damage.

Local MP and Union minister Ajay Bhatt says the government is ready to handle any eventuality.
