Karnataka, Manipur, Chandigarh Ace Innovation Index

NEW DELHI: Karnataka once again topped the major states category of the third edition of the Indian Innovation Index followed by Telangana and Haryana.

Manipur was the best performer in the category of northeastern and hilly states. Uttarakhand and Meghalaya stood at second and third places respectively.

In the union territories and city-states category, Chandigarh was ranked as the top innovator followed by Delhi.

The report was released by NITI Aayog Vice Chairman Suman Bery in presence of pubic policy think tank member Dr VK Saraswat, CEO Parameswaran Iyer and senior adviser Neeraj Sinha.

The India Innovation Index 2021 has been prepared by the NITI Aayog and the Institute for Competitiveness. It presents an evaluation of the innovation readiness of states and UTs and highlights potential challenges that deter the government, businesses and individuals from fully realizing their potential.

The report ranks the states and the union territories on their innovation performance to set off competition amongst them.

Karnataka’s top performance can be attributed to high FDI inflow – third highest in the country and second highest among major states category, a recent boom of startups, and a large number of venture capital deals. The number of startups increased from about 11,000 to about 19,000 in a year, the report says.

Speaking on the occasion, Saraswat said, “Innovation is the key to sustainable and inclusive growth. It can help us solve the biggest challenges of our times: bringing millions out of poverty, generating livelihood opportunities, and paving the way for an Aatmanirbhar Bharat.”
