Reflecting on his early choices, Javed said, “I told my dad. He probably wanted me to go into classical or ghazals, but he said, ‘Do what you feel is right. I won’t force you.’ So, I made my decision, came to Bombay, and many people helped me—absolutely selflessly—and I’m very grateful.”

As the conversation turned to Jab We Met, Mr. Dua reflected how the song was important for his career, “Now we come to a very important moment: in 2007, after your struggles in 2005, you ended up with Pritam—a very talented music composer who stood out among his peers. Director Imtiaz Ali was making a beautiful film Jab We Met, which became a milestone in Indian cinema. Even today, when we think of love stories, Jab We Met stands tall.”

Years later, at IIFA, Javed said the memories came rushing back when Shahid and Kareena reunited on stage.

Javed also shared a behind-the-scenes anecdote about working with Pritam. “Though the first song I sang for Pritam Da was Ek Din Teri Rahon Mein, every song has a story. I was at home when I got a sudden call from Pritam Da telling me to rush to Krishna Studio to record Nagada Nagada.”

He continued, “I went there, learned the song, wrote it down, and recorded it in my own style. Later, when Pritam came in, he said, ‘No, I don’t want it sung this way. Follow the way the track singer sang it.’ So, I copied it exactly.” The song, as he explained, was picturized on a lively dance number featuring Shekhar and Urvashi.

Javed concluded the segment by opening up about the pressure and passion that go into every performance. “Every song is a challenge. Since I get fewer songs, I put my all into making each one my best, as if it’s my first and last opportunity. That’s the zone I stay in while recording.”

Through this heartfelt recollection, Javed Ali not only paid tribute to a film that helped define his career, but also reminded audiences of the timelessness of music—and the memories it carries.
