NEW DELHI: Fashion entrepreneur and author Julia Haart tells global leaders and innovators at We The Planet UNGA 100 Disruptors Summit that artificial intelligence (AI) should be seen as a tool, much like the automobile and telephone were in their early days.

Haart cites historical skepticism toward technological breakthroughs. Referring to the Ford biography, she recalls a banker’s warning that “the horse is here to stay, but the automobile is only a novelty, a fad.”
She also highlights concerns once raised about the telephone: critics described it as “the most dangerous of all, because it enters into every bubble,” with its network of wires seen as a “perpetual menace to life and property.”
“Today we all use cars and phones. AI is no different — it is simply a tool,” Haart says.
To illustrate her point, she shares a personal anecdote. “When my daughter was five, I came home one evening and the babysitter ran out of the house. My three-and-a-half-year-old son was inside with half his hair at regular length and the other half completely chopped off. Someone had just taken scissors and cut half his hair,” she recalls, comparing the unpredictability of new experiences to how society first reacts to technology.
