JSW head Sajjan Jindal refutes rape allegations amid student outcry at O.P. Jindal University

Sajjan Jindal has denied the allegations of rape levelled against him

NEW DELHI: Sajjan Jindal, the prominent Chairman and Managing Director of JSW Group, has denied the serious allegations of rape levelled against him. In a statement released in his capacity, Jindal asserts, “Sajjan Jindal denies these false and baseless allegations. He is committed to providing full cooperation throughout the investigation. As the investigation is ongoing, we will refrain from further comment at this stage. We kindly request you to respect the privacy of the family.”

The Mumbai Police Department filed a First Information Report (FIR) against Jindal at the Bandra Kurla Complex Police Station on December 13. The complainant, a 30-year-old Mumbai woman, alleged that the incident occurred on January 24, 2022, at a penthouse in JSW Group’s BKC premises. Jindal faces charges under Indian Penal Code (IPC) 376 (rape), IPC 354 (assault or criminal force to a woman with the intent to outrage her modesty), and IPC 503 (criminal intimidation).

The complainant’s statement reveals that she first met Jindal on October 8, 2021, in Dubai, where they exchanged phone numbers intending to pursue property-related deals. Subsequently, she claimed that after several meetings, Jindal attempted to make sexual advances on multiple occasions, all of which she rebuffed.

The FIR also highlighted that she initially approached the Mumbai police on February 16, to file the complaint against Sajjan Jindal. Faced with an unregistered FIR despite several months passing, she sought legal recourse, moving to the Bombay High Court on December 5.

The court, on December 12, ordered the registration of the FIR. Mumbai police have refuted allegations of delaying the registration, emphasising the ongoing nature of the investigation. The case remains a sensitive and evolving situation, requiring a careful and thorough legal examination.

Meanwhile, on November 13, Sajjan Jindal received an honor of having an academic block named after him at O.P Jindal Global University in Sonipat. Notably, the university, established by the accused’s brother, the tycoon Naveen Jindal, in memory of their late father, OP Jindal, recently underwent renovations, during which a majority of its buildings were renamed after members of the founding family. Following the revelation of the FIR, students at the university began urging a reconsideration of the naming, specifically calling for the renaming of a university building currently dedicated to Sajjan Jindal.
