Jharkhand Cable Car Disaster: 3 dead; Rescue Op Over, CM Soren Orders Probe

RANCHI: The operation to rescue people stranded in cable cars on a ropeway at Trikut Parvat in Jharkhand’s Deoghar successfully concluded on Tuesday, two days after some of the cars collided with each other due to malfunction resulting in several deaths and injuries, Chief Minister Hemant Soren announced.

At least three people were killed in separate incidents of collision among cable cars and more than 50 people were rescued.

In a video message, CM Soren thanked the Indian Air Force, the Army, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP), and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) for their services in the rescue operation.

He also said that the government will conduct an inquiry and take strict action against the guilty.

Ten people including three women and two children were rescued on Tuesday, two days after the incident.

Jharkhand Chief Minister Hemant Soren has announced a high-level probe into the accident and said the administration is monitoring the rescue operation closely.

The 766-meter long Trikut Ropeway is touted as India’s highest vertical ropeway. It is located around 20 km away from Baba Baidyanath Temple.

At least 32 people were rescued on Monday, while one died when being airlifted. Food and water were sent through drones to people stranded in cable cars. As many as 12 people are being treated in hospitals.

Five persons are still believed to be in the cable cars. Efforts to rescue them all are in full swing.

BJP leader and former Jharkhand chief minister Raghubar Das flayed the state government for being inactive after such a tragic accident and demanded a compensation of Rs 1 crore for the family of the deceased.

“The government did not care about the lives of the people. The inability to make quick decisions resulted in passengers hanging in the air overnight,” he said.
