MUMBAI: Actor Jaideep Ahlawat, in conversation on The New Indian Podcast, shared a nostalgic memory of his college days and the excitement of owning his family’s first car.
Ahlawat revealed that he never owned a bike, scooter, or even a bicycle during his student years. “I used to travel by bus — both government and private ones. Papa’s scooter was at home, but I couldn’t take it to college because then how would the family manage their work at home?” he explained.

It was only during his graduation’s final year that a new chapter unfolded. “In my graduation’s final year, Papa bought a Maruti 800 — second-hand — as a gift for my mother’s birthday. I don’t know how many years of savings it must have taken him. But that day, we felt like kings,” Ahlawat recalled fondly.
He compared the moment to the luxury of owning a high-end car in Mumbai. “That Maruti 800 was no less than a Mercedes or Audi for us. It was amazing,” he added.
Speaking about his love for driving, Ahlawat shared, “I enjoy long drives a lot. I have driven between Delhi and Mumbai four times.”
This heartfelt recollection underlined not only the actor’s grounded upbringing but also the emotional value attached to small milestones in middle-class Indian households.
