Is Singham star Prakash Raj joining BJP? Actor busts rumours

BJP not 'ideologically rich to 'buy' him, says 'Singham' actor Prakash Raj

NEW DELHI: Amidst swirling social media speculation, actor Prakash Raj has unequivocally dismissed rumours of joining the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections. The 59-year-old, renowned for his candid criticism of the Narendra Modi government, took to X (formerly Twitter) to sarcastically address the rumours that had sent waves across digital platforms.

In response to a viral post by user ‘The Skin Doctor’ claiming his imminent BJP affiliation, Raj’s retort was sharp and sardonic: “I guess they tried. must have realised they were not rich enough (ideologically) to buy me.. what do you think friends #justasking”. This clarification followed heightened anticipation spurred by the viral post, which suggested a political shift for the award-winning actor.

Raj’s repudiation comes in the wake of his earlier statements at the Kerala Literature Festival, where he disclosed that multiple political parties were vying for his allegiance, not due to shared ideology but as a consequence of his vocal criticism of PM Modi. Citing a reluctance to fall into partisan traps, Raj’s stance underscores a commitment to independent thought and political neutrality amidst mounting speculation.

A seasoned figure in Indian cinema with notable roles in films like “Kanchivaram”, “Singham”, and “Wanted”, Prakash Raj’s foray into politics as an independent candidate in the 2019 general elections garnered attention, albeit without electoral success. His current refutation of BJP affiliation reaffirms his position as a non-aligned voice in the Indian political landscape.

Beyond the realm of electoral politics, Raj’s recent engagements have further underscored his vocal opposition to BJP policies and rhetoric. Standing alongside climate activist Sonam Wangchuk, Raj denounced governmental inaction and false promises, advocating for grassroots mobilization and constitutional rights.

In a social media exchange, Raj also aimed BJP-affiliated Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut, rebuking her erroneous characterisation of Subhas Chandra Bose as India’s first Prime Minister. His scathing critique of BJP politics was evident in a recent post where he dubbed the party’s promises as a “Shameless Washing Machine Guarantee”.
