SHIMLA: Jabna Chouhan from Mandi, who in 2016 emerged as the youngest panchayat pradhan not only in Himachal Pradesh but the entire country, has joined the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).

The decision comes on the eve of the AAP’s planned mega roadshow in Mandi town on April 6, in which, among others, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP’s national convener Arvind Kejriwal and his Punjab counterpart Bhagwant Mann would participate.

In 2017, Jabna Chouhan, now 29, had shot to limelight after Prime Minister Narendra Modi honoured her on the occasion of International Women’s Day for her remarkable achievements.

Bollywood actor Akshay Kumar had also praised Jabna for her work on hygiene during the promotion of his film ‘Toilet-Ek Premkatha’.

Originally hailing from Keyolidhar village under Tharjun panchayat of Mandi district’s Seraj assembly constituency, which is represented in the Assembly by Chief Minister Jai Ram Thakur, Jabna said that she wanted to be “a part of the change that was sweeping the country, most recently in neighbouring Punjab”.

In January 2016, Jabna had won the election for the post of Tharjun panchayat pradhan.

Only 22 then, she was commended for doing a remarkable job in her panchayat regarding hygiene and alcohol prohibition. After this, Jabna made Nachan Assembly constituency her workplace. At present, she is running an organisation called Oriental Foundation in Nachan.

Confident that the AAP would sweep the coming assembly elections, she said she joined the party “unconditionally”.

“If you look at the trend of those joining the Aam Aadmi Party in the state, most are associated with the grassroots politics. Several among them are former people’s representatives associated with panchayati raj,” said a political analyst.
