New Delhi: The Indian government has blocked 15 YouTube channels operated from Pakistan for allegedly spreading provocative, communally sensitive content, and misinformation targeting India, its Army, and security agencies. The decision followed recommendations from the Ministry of Home Affairs.
Officials stated that the banned channels, including prominent Pakistani news outlets such as Dawn News, Samaa TV, Ary News, and Geo News, were found circulating false narratives, especially in the aftermath of the recent Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir. The content was deemed harmful to Indiaโs sovereignty and communal harmony.
This move aligns with Indiaโs ongoing efforts to counter malicious propaganda and fake news originating from across the border. Earlier, in June 2020, India had banned TikTok and 58 other Chinese apps following the Galwan Valley clash, citing national security and data privacy concerns.
The government has reiterated its commitment to safeguarding national interests by taking strict action against digital platforms spreading anti-India rhetoric. Authorities have warned that similar measures will be taken against any entity found engaging in disinformation campaigns.
The ban has sparked reactions on social media, with many supporting the decision as necessary for national security, while critics question its impact on media freedom. Pakistan has yet to officially respond to the action.
India continues to monitor online content closely, emphasizing the need for responsible digital discourse amid rising geopolitical tensions.
