In A First Since Border Stand-Off, Chinese FM Wang Yi To Visit India

NEW DELHI: Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi will arrive in New Delhi on an official visit to India on March 24, marking the first high profile visit from China since the border stand-off along the Line of Actual Control (LAC).

Foreign Minister Yi is expected to meet External Affairs Minister Dr. S Jaishankar and National Security Advisor Ajit Doval during his visit. He may also call on Prime Minister Narendra Modi, said a source familiar with the development.

This is the first visit by any Chinese minister or high-ranking official since the border stand-off started in Galwan Valley along the LAC in May 2020.

Yi is expected to invite Prime Minister Modi for the BRICS summit which will be hosted by Beijing later this year. India is a member of the bloc.

Notably, the border stand-off between the two countries is still continuing in several areas along the LAC as multiple rounds of diplomatic and military discussions failed to resolve the border issues completely.

On March 11, India and China held 15th round of Corps Commander-level meeting at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Indian side and agreed to maintain security and stability on the ground along the LAC.

Experts have blamed the Chinese side for the continuing stalemate in the talks, accusing it of applying pressure to accept its terms.

“Over, it is disappointing as nothing concrete has come out even after 15 rounds. It’s clear that China wants things resolved on its terms. This is not at all conducive to improving bilateral relations,” said Commodore (retired) Seshadri Vasan, Director General of Chennai Centre for China Studies.
