NEW DELHI / PORTLAND, OREGON: A 32-year-old Indian national, Rajinder Kumar, is facing serious charges after a tragic highway crash in Oregon killed a newlywed couple on November 24. Kumar allegedly jackknifed his semi-truck on U.S. Highway-20 in Deschutes County, resulting in a violent collision that claimed the lives of William Micah Carter (25) and Jennifer Lynn Lower (24), who were married just weeks earlier.

The incident has triggered intense political outrage after the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) confirmed that Kumar was in the United States illegally and had been released by the Biden administration after entering unlawfully through Lukeville, Arizona, in 2022. According to DHS, immigration officials later issued work authorization in 2023, and Kumar was subsequently granted a Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) in California, a state known for its sanctuary immigration policies.
After the fatal crash, U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) issued an immigration detainer, stating that Kumar should have been in federal custody instead of driving commercial vehicles on American highways. He is currently facing charges of criminally negligent homicide and reckless endangerment, and remains in custody as the legal process unfolds.
The case has intensified political debate over immigration enforcement and trucking regulations, with critics blaming what they describe as systemic failures that allowed an undocumented immigrant to legally operate an 18-wheeler. Supporters of stricter immigration control argue that the tragedy highlights dangerous gaps in policy under the Biden-Harris administration and California’s licensing framework under Governor Gavin Newsom.
The families of the victims are calling for accountability, while advocacy groups say the crash exposes urgent national security and public-safety concerns. The investigation is ongoing.
