NEW DELHI: Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Mandi has made significant improvements in three categories of the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) rankings released by education minister Dharmendra Pradhan on Friday.

The institute climbed up 39 places in the ‘Overall’ category, 21 spots in ‘Engineering’, and ranked 39 in the ‘Research’ category for the first time. The IIT has been ranked 43 in ‘Overall’ and 20 among all engineering institutes, respectively.

The government of India launched the NIRF ranking framework for higher educational institutions in 2015. It outlines a methodology to rank institutions across the country.

Speaking about IIT Mandi’s improved rankings, director Prof Laxmidhar Behera said, “All this has been made possible by the untiring efforts of our excellent faculty and students and their contribution to research, teaching, and other parameters.”

“We will strive to keep our commitment to make IIT Mandi relevant with our research for the local region in Himachal Pradesh, while also being of relevance to the country,” he added.

Announcing the NIRF 2022 ranking results, Pradhan said all centrally funded technical institutions, deemed universities and private institutes should follow three frameworks: accreditation, ranking, and assessment.

“Innovation and entrepreneurship will be included as one of the parameters of ARIIA from next year onwards to avoid duplicity,” he said, adding that the government aims to make the education system of India affordable for the common students in which digitalization will play a vital role.
