NEW DELHI: In a disturbing incident highlighting ongoing linguistic tensions in Karnataka, Indian Air Force Wing Commander Shiladitya Bose and his wife, Squadron Leader Madhumita, were allegedly assaulted during a road rage episode in Bengaluru.

The couple was en route to Kempegowda International Airport from DRDO Colony in CV Raman Nagar when the confrontation occurred.โ€‹

According to reports, a motorcyclist began tailing their vehicle and initiated a confrontation, allegedly hurling verbal abuses in Kannada. Upon noticing the DRDO sticker on their car, the biker reportedly made derogatory comments about the couple.

When Wing Commander Bose stepped out to address the situation, he was allegedly struck on the forehead with a key, causing bleeding. The assailant then reportedly threw a stone at their vehicle, further injuring Bose.โ€‹

Wing Commander Bose shared a video on social media detailing the incident, expressing disappointment that bystanders did not assist but instead hurled abuses at him and his wife.โ€‹

This incident is not isolated. In January 2025, two men from Bihar were reportedly attacked in Bengaluru for not speaking Kannada, leading to the arrest of three individuals. Similarly, in October 2024, a 52-year-old man was assaulted in a Bengaluru store after urging staff to learn Kannada.โ€‹

These events underscore the challenges faced by non-Kannada speakers in Bengaluru, a city known for its diverse population. While many advocate for the promotion of the local language, incidents of aggression towards those unfamiliar with Kannada raise concerns about the cityโ€™s cultural integration and the need for mutual respect among its residents.โ€‹

Authorities are investigating the recent road rage incident involving the IAF officers, and discussions continue on how to address the broader issue of language-related conflicts in Bengaluru.
