In a bid to change the ‘tradition’, of Himachal Pradesh opting for a change in governments in assembly elections, the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has put their faith in incumbent Jai Ram Thakur.

In an exclusive chat with The New Indian, amid his hectic campaign schedule, CM Thakur touched on various crucial subjects like the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), speculations about former CM PK Dhumal not being allowed to contest the poll, and the Narendra Modi aura that shrouded the election, among others.

Excerpts from the interview:

Alok Singh: How is your campaigning going on?

Jai Ram Thakur: See, the BJP is going to form the government again in the state. And I am happy to notice that the interest of the people has increased towards the BJP. Based on what we have said in our sankalp patra (manifesto), we will act accordingly.

Alok Singh: The issue of a uniform civil code has taken centre stage?

Jai Ram Thakur: We have categorically said UCC is our issue and poll agenda. We are not going to hurry it. We will thoroughly study all the implications before we implement it.

Alok Singh: One issue that made some noise is about former CM PK Dhumal. Why is he not contesting the election?

Jai Ram Thakur: He is not contesting. He has given in writing that he does not want to contest. But he is present. He is guiding us in the election.

Alok Singh: There are rumours that the party high command asked him not to contest…

Jai Ram Thakur: That is not true. Party accepted his proposals. He is campaigning. Everyone does not contest polls. (Former CM) Shanta Kumarji, and Dhumalji are working for the party. Shanta Kumarji recently attended a Yogi Ji (UP Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath) function. He addressed the people. Dhumalji, is campaigning in his area…

Alok Singh: We have seen the posters of PM (Narendra) Modi all over the state. There are more posters of him than of you.

Jai Ram Thakur: See, that is not the case… He is the Prime minister, his posters will be seen more.

Alok Singh: You are campaigning in Kullu. What have you told the people to give?

Jai Ram Thakur: We cannot announce anything due to the election code of conduct. But whatever we have written in our party manifesto, we will ensure we implement it. We have focused on women’s empowerment in particular.

Alok Singh: What is your take on Congress’ Old Pension Scheme and financial aid to women?

Jai Ram Thakur: Congress is not coming to power, what is the point of discussing it.
