Modi govt to table Women’s Reservation Bill in parliament in New Parliament

NEW DELHI: The Modi government will bring the Women’s Reservation Bill, which seeks to provide a 33 per cent quota, in parliament during the special session on Tuesday.

According to top government sources, the Bill will be tabled by Union law minister Arjun Ram Meghwal in the Lok Sabha for consideration.

The discussion on provisions of the Bill will be held in Lok Sabha on Wednesday and in Rajya Sabha on September 21, the above-cited sources told The New Indian.

The Bill, which has been introduced in parliament but lapsed several times in the past, seeks reservation for women in parliament and state assemblies. It was first introduced by the then Deve Gowda-led United Front government in September 1996 in the form of the 81st Constitution Amendment Bill.

Right now, women account for 15 per cent of the total strength of the Lok Sabha, with their actual number being 78. In Rajya Sabha, they account for 14 per cent of the total headcount.

States like Andhra Pradesh, Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Goa, Gujarat, Himachal Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Madhya Pradesh, Maharashtra, Manipur, Meghalaya, Odisha, Sikkim, Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Tripura and Puducherry account for 10 per cent women representation in state assemblies.

As per reports, the proposal to move the Bill during the special session was cleared in an unscheduled meeting of the Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
