Disgraced J&K DSP Sheikh Adil Mushtaq sent to 10-day judicial remand in corruption case

SRINAGAR: Sheikh Adil Mushtaq, the J&K Police officer who allegedly helped a terrorist evade arrest and tried to implicate fellow officer, has been sent to 10-day judicial custody by a Srinagar-based special anti corruption court on Tuesday.
The deputy superintendent of police (DSP) rank office will be lodged in the Central Prison in Srinagar till October 12.
Mushtaq, a 2015 batch office of the Kashmir Police Service (KPS) officer, was arrested on September 21 in connection with corruption and extortion charges following a raid at his residence and interrogation. Incriminating documents and electronic devices were seized.
He was produced before Special Judge, Anti-Corruption Court, Surinder Singh. According to legal sources, the Srinagar Police did not seek further custodial remand citing the interrogation had been completed.
Srinagar Police sought 15 days judicial remand but the special court ordered to send him to jail for 10 days.
A copy of the remand order of the court which is available with The New Indian says “It reflects from the case diary file that the investigation is in progress which necessitates the custody of the accused in the judicial remand in view of serious nature of allegations levelled against the accused viz-a-viz the status of the investigation.”

“The accused is directed to be lodged in Central Jail Srinagar and be produced before the competent court after the expiry of the remand period,” it reads.
He is accused of assisting a Lashkar-e-Taiba terrorist to evade his arrest and attempted to falsely implicate another police officer who was investigating him.
Mushtaq is also facing serious allegations of corruption, extortion, blackmail, tampering of evidence and widespread misuse of his official position for sexual gratification.
A senior J&K government officer on condition of anonymity told The New Indian: “The charges against Sheikh Adil Mushtaq are serious enough for his dismissal from service under Article 311 (2)(c) of the Constitution”.
