NEW DELHI: A mega common facility centre and two standard design factories (SDF) will be operationalised in Mumbai’s Santacruz Electronic Export Processing Zone-Special Economic Zone (SEEPZ-SEZ) by May next year.

Union commerce minister Piyush Goyal on Thursday visited the site and reviewed the progress of the construction.

The mega common facility centre aims to provide support to jewellery processing units including small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) in the designing and manufacturing of gem and jewellery products.

It will enhance the existing quality, productivity, skill of manpower, domestic research and development, technological advancement and cost competitiveness, as per the commerce ministry.

“The facility centre will offer common facilities which are not available with the individual units as they require huge investment. It is a social project and is not to be considered as a business proposition,” Goyal said during his visit.

The centre will also include a training centre which will run skill development courses for the industry which costs Rs 82.31 crores.

Two new SDFs are proposed to be constructed in SEEPZ-SEZ for relocating the units at SDF-I to SDF-9 and SDF-10. After relocating the units, the 47 years old building will be demolished for creating world-class infrastructure.
